Got Questions? We’ve got answers.
Do I need to be a doctor or professional designer?
No, although that is certainly a bonus. You should, however, have a good understanding of design methods and processes.
Can I put EDC work on LinkedIn or in my portfolio?
We hope you will! As a collective, we have a commitment to working in the open and sharing everything. It’s our hope that our members will feel proud of what they work on and their association with the EDC. We’re also committed to making sure the people who do the work are seen as the source of the work. We’re encouraging everyone to share their participation in the EDC and what they work on.
Do you have needs for other skills?
Yes! As the EDC continues to grow, we need help with almost every aspect of our evolution. Specifically, we have opportunities for people with experience in:
Journalism and storytelling
Development and strategic partnerships
Communications and PR
Web development
Still don’t see your super power listed? Drop us a note!
How much time do I need to commit?
That’s up to you. We have 2–3 hour needs and 3–5 week needs. We also know, in these times, your availability may change at any time. We totally understand. We ask that you only commit to what you can deliver at this time. And, if that changes, be open with your project and the EDC operations leads.
Can I pick what I work on?
Sort of! We absolutely want to hear your preferences. We hope we can help you join a new or existing project around your preferences. In some cases, our members come with a newly identified challenge that is a fit for the EDC and we’re able to help put a team together around that new effort.
What happens after I apply?
You’ll get an email with next steps and an invitation to join our Slack board. We’ll invite you to introduce yourself and express interest in any existing or soon-to-launch projects. We also host weekly onboarding calls and strongly suggest joining one early to learn more about the EDC and how you can get involved quickly.
Will I be paid? Will I be an employee?
You will not be an employee or contractor of the EDC or its partners. As we pursue non-profit status, there we hope to help teams offset any out of pocket expenses for tools or materials. There may be future opportunities for the EDC to participate in funded work, however you should come in expecting to volunteer whatever time you have to give.
What’s expected of me?
Soon, we’ll ask all new members to agree to an oath affirming our values, commitments, and community expectations. Members who do not live up to those expectations may be asked to leave, or removed from the community. This helps us insure a safe, caring community for our members and our partners.
